Mövenpick Hotel, Ras Al Khaimah

The Mövenpick Hotel is a spectacular beachfront retreat, located on Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah. As Art Consultants, we were approached to design and deliver an artwork and accessories package that drew inspiration from the local landscape, wildlife and culture. Our work was focused on the public areas of the hotel and All-Day Dining restaurant.

A modern hotel lobby with a large framed line drawing of Ras Al Khaima including mountains, historic buildings, bushes, and several animals. The illustration is black and white except for small framed panes of glass where the art is colored within.

We wanted to capture the property’s contemporary feel and the brand’s philosophy of ‘doing ordinary things in an extraordinary way’ by creating impactful artwork.

Taking inspiration from Ras Al Khaimah's distinctive landscape and culture, our intention was to create a varied art collection that would have an authentic connection to local history and heritage, told through the creations of local artists.

On arrival, guests are greeted by an impressive atrium sculpture by Emirati artist Azza Al Qubaisi. The boulder installation draws inspiration from the original natural landscape of the area, paying homage to the traditional owners of the land.

Featured in the main lobby is a large line drawing by Arab artist Lama Khatib Daniel, displayed as a mural overlaid with a series of framed hand-painted artworks representing the viewer looking through remnants of windows found in the old houses.

Also hanging high in the lobby is a set of three original watercoloured Sheikh portraits by local artist Vijay Narayan – each displayed in a glass box with a mirror backing etched in an Arabesque pattern reminiscent of RAK architecture.

Along the corridors, is a series of layered original silkscreen artworks by Emirati artist Salama Nasib. As a native of RAK, there is a poetic and sentimental quality to her work that evokes a nostalgic love of tradition and culture.

Reflecting the beach context of the hotel, a diptych relief artwork by Egyptian artist Mohamed Banawy uses wood, sand, and mirror in his trademark blue hues. In contrast, this space also features a contemporary textile piece by local artist Stephanie Neville, inspired by the rich and colourful landscape of RAK and nods to the cultural craft of Sadu and Khous weaving.

The accessories in the All-day dining pay homage to the local context, by bringing in elements such as colourful spices and vessels with ethnic silhouettes, all playing on the local UAE market narrative.
